The Magicman
A lift, wine, stairs, that stare,
A production with a lecture,
A breath of fresh air,
The show, absolutely a wonder!

Singapore welcomed Jackson Wang with wide, open arms as he performed his first solo headline tour MAGIC MAN WORLD TOUR 2022 – 2023, on 23 December 2022, at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
It was a sight to behold for the audience, from the start till finish. The show started with a lit lift that descended down the stage into the first song – 100 Ways.
He continued to perform a few of his older hits throughout – Drive You Home, LMLY, I Love you 3000, Pretty Please.
While we also expected a serenade from Jackson Wang for one or two of his lucky fans, we were not prepared for the heat he caused. The hip thrusts, the skinship, the rose, and his cute ass.

Jackson really threw himself out there and tried to reach out to as many people as he could. He scaled the wall to reach the Level 2 audience with just a jump at the back (to the security’s dismay!). The stage was also full of people he appreciated during the encore, and he prepared an ‘after-party’ for all of us in the final moments of the show with remixed version of his songs.
What I appreciated the most was the production itself. The way the stage was used, which included a treadmill in the middle of the stage, flowing curtains to enhance the song’s meaning, a rising platform that rotated 360 degrees at the extended stage, a huge hanging stairway in the middle of the stadium that turned into stairs and a huge guitar (with pyro effects!), to even the camera angles that captured the choreography in an aerial view, were a sight to behold. The amazing use of stage lights, dancers, live band that accentuated the mood and vibe of the songs. An actual Champagne bottle also became the remix to his song, Champagne Cool.

The stage layout was clearly thought out to give a full visual experience from all angles – at one point, Jackson sang Dopamine when he was on the stairway and it magically ascended up to the same level as the Level 3 audience. Each guest received a custom ring light as a souvenir too.
What made it even more special was Jackson’s vision and artistry. He may have said that the only thing he did was to entertain us for two hours, but it was more than that. The message behind the concert was apparent. He drove home the point that you have to find your own magic and to follow your dreams. You have nothing to rely on but yourself to do the things that you want.

This was carried out creatively through segmented themes like that began with ‘Masked’ and ended with ‘Hope’. However, it personally felt a bit too heavy towards the end. But perhaps it was meant to be that way because the reality is, one hopeful moment does not last forever.
It was not a concert, but an experience.
A very new experience, considering the fact that um.music had been to at least 10 concerts in 2022.
He said that Singapore has a special place in his heart. Well, Mr Jackson Wang has a special place in my heart!
